What do you guys like to do on a Saturday night? One of my favourite things is to go out for a few drinks. Last Saturday, the entire team went out for more than a few, and some of us a still a bit worse for wear…
The rest of us obviously had some pretty nifty hangover cures, which got me thinking – what do other people do to get rid of their alcohol-fuelled nausea? So I did some research and found a couple of these insane remedies. Hold onto your hat cos some of these are a bit strange..
1. Fried Canaries – Ancient Rome
I don’t know if it was the promise of protein or the satisfaction of deep-fried oily goodness, but rumour has it fried canaries were the flavor of the day to counteract a little too much wine!
2. Voodoo – Haiti
When all else fails, a best offense is the best defense. Voodoo practitioners swear by placing 13 black-headed pins into the cork of the offending bottle (or bottles, as it may be) to rid the hangover from your body. Of course the challenge comes when you were drinking from glass bottles but hey, sounds like solid reasoning to me!
3. Buffalo Milk – Namibia
The interesting thing with this “buffalo milk” is that it’s not Buffalo milk at all! It’s a crazy concoction of ice cream, dark rum, spiced rum, cream liquor and whole cream itself. I think the idea is that you will feel so sick, you’ll naturally expel the alcohol out of your body in no time?
4. Dried Bull’s Penis – Sicily
Yes you read that correctly. On the assumption that it restores your virility, this was once a popular hangover cure. Maybe, given time, we will come to embrace this as we have pizza and pasta? Maybe if it was IN a pizza or plate of pasta?
5. Rabbit Droppings Tea – USA
Only in the States…. Hungover cowboys would drink a “tea” made from the droppings of rabbits, by simply dissolving the droppings into boiling water. Talk about wild wild west…!
6. Pickled Sheep’s Eye – Mongolia
Tomato juice and pickled sheep’s eye. Spke it with a bit of vodka andslip in a stalk of celery and I think it sounds like the modern day Bloody Mary!
7. Pancita (Cow’s Stomach) – Mexico
The spicier the better, I’m told! A watery soup made from tripe, onions and lemons, this Mexican concoction is said to rid you of even the worst hangover… Which is no doubt from too much Tequila!
8. Poutine – Canada
Finally… one that I’m actually keen to try! Thick cut French fries smothered in gravy and topped with chunks of cheese (curd), this is a good one even when you’re not hungover. Or – a reason to drink too much in the first place?
These are my favourites so far – anyone heard of anything stranger? Let me know by Friday, just in time for the weekend 😛
Cheers! Let’s drink to that.
